Paolo di Canio was such an enigmatic figure at Celtic during his one and only season at the club.

His flair and temperament made him an instant hit with the fans and in 1996 when Tommy Burns signed him, we quickly saw just what kind of player, and person we were getting.

After making 37 appearances for the club and scoring 15 goals, di Canio won the the SPFA Player of the Year award. But that genius on the park was also coupled with a dark side as he saw red against Hearts in November of that year and was also involved in an explosive on pitch argument at Celtic Park with Ian Ferguson in a Glasgow Derby.

And apparently, nothing has really changed.

As a manager, he is still a genius when it comes to football and his temperament had not changed either when he swapped a football jersey for a suit and tie.

That’s according to former Celtic star, Paul Caddis.

Caddis was a player at Swindon Town when di Canio was boss and he has lifted the lid on what life was like under the fiery Italian.

Speaking to Birmingham Live, Caddis revealed, “It took him a little bit of time to adapt to League Two but to work under on the football pitch he was brilliant, off the football pitch he was a nightmare, an absolute nightmare, he wanted to live your life for you.

“It was difficult, he would be up at boys who were 34-35-years-old telling them not to take milk in their coffee – just things like that.

“You think ‘The guy is 34-years-old with three kids and a house, you can’t tell him not to take milk in his coffee’.

“We knew when he left Swindon that he would have struggled at Sunderland.

“We had to do it, we had no option at League Two but to follow his rules.”

di Canio is currently out of work at the moment but was strongly linked to the Celtic job back in 2014 [The Guardian] prior to the appointment of Ronny Deila.
