Celtic fans still appear split on what to do with defender Dedrcyk Boyata, although a majority of polled fans believe the club should hold on to him this January.

The Belgian international has performed well since coming back into the side after falling out with the club in the wake of a rejected Fulham bid.

During the international break he didn’t fall into the trap of bringing up old grievances, stating he was committed to playing for Celtic at the moment.

Still though, there’s no sign of him signing a new contract, putting the Hoops in a very difficult position heading into the January transfer window.

Sell him and recoup at least some of market value, risking potential defensive collapse in Brendan Rodgers’ first-team. Keep him and ensure defensive stability but almost guarantee losing him for nothing when the summer comes around.

In an ideal world, Celtic would have a capable replacement ready to come in when the January window opens, but as we know things don’t ever work out that easily when it comes to defensive signings.

That may be why 53% of respondents to a poll we published earlier this week want him to stick around beyond January. Is it really worth seriously weakening the defensive line for the sake of a few million quid when there are trophies, and potentially European progression, on the line?
