Celtic fans have reacted strongly to comments from former SFA president George Peat about the 2008 SPL extension.

The league allowed Rangers more time to complete their end-of-season fixtures after they made it to the UEFA Cup Final, where they were soundly beaten by FC Zenit.

The Hoops famously pipped Walter Smith’s side to the league title a week later on an emotional Thursday night at Tannadice.

Ever since, the Govan side have whined about perceived unfair treatment and the feelings around that period have been brought to the fore again this week after an interview Peat gave to BBC Scotland.

He said:

I remember when Rangers got to the final in Manchester. I got a phone call from a prominent chairman of a club requesting me not to help Rangers in any way.

And it so happened that I had already had a meeting with Lex Gold at the SPL because what we were willing to do was to extend the season because of the fixture pile-up that Rangers had and I was most disappointed when I got back to the office to receive this call to ask me not to help them in any way.

That really stuck in my throat.

The whole thing is rather pathetic. Dredging a ten-year old ‘scandal’ would be bad enough, but everyone seems to be conveniently forgetting that the authorities did in fact go out of their way to give Rangers as much room as possible to play their games around the final.

These Celtic fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on Peat and his comments…
