With Celtic’s defensive deficiencies being exposed in last nights Champions League qualifier, there has never been a greater need to strengthen the defence from last nights evidence.

I have never known a time where the Celtic defence has been so weak in all my years as a Celtic supporter. Even in the dark days of the nineties we still had defenders like Tom Boyd, Dariusz Wdowczyk, Tosh McKinlay and Alan Stubbs. All with experience. All (except Stubbs) internationals.

And those are just the few I can think of off the top of my head.

As Celtic look to prioritise the right back position, it seems Aurelio Buta is now just days away from signing for the Hoops.

George Baldock was the number one target but there was one major reason that caused the deal to break down.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show, Davie Provan has revealed, “George Baldock, I think, would have been a great signing for Celtic.  Apparently they are baulking at the wages.

“But you know good players cost good money and Baldock is the type of player that Celtic are going to have to sign.”

The experienced right back is currently on £26,000 per week at The Blades and it is not known what his wage demands from the Hoops were, but according to Provan, that was thee main reason that killed the deal.

Boss, Ange Postecoglou, has revealed his frustrations in the media about the length of time it is taking to get deals over the line and clearly Baldock was the preferred target. Failure to offer Baldock the terms he was after has clearly frustrated Postecoglou but hopefully the Buta deal will be sealed sooner rather than later.
