As Celtic’s pursuit of a right back continues. Belgian media site Voetbalnieuws has reported that the Hoops have been told to stump up €3.5m (£2.9m) if they want to secure the services for Aurélio Buta.

Not only that, the media outlet also claims that the Belgian Juliper League side have signed his replacement leaving the door open for Buta to join the  Hoops this summer.  Antwerp signed Jelle Bataille from KV Oostende at the beginning of July which allowed the club to facilitate the sale of Buta.

It should be a free shot. A penalty with no keeper. A Panenka. There is genuinely no reason that the move shouldn’t go through without a hitch, until up step the Celtic board.

And in true Celtic board fashion, Voetbalnieuws reports that the Hoops have offered €2.5m (£2.1m) for Buta. A full €1m less than the asking price.

If this is true, and we all know from experience of transfer windows since what seems like the dawn of time with this board, it probably is, why can’t the club just say, ‘There you go, thank you very much’. Get the deal done. No fuss.

I do understand we should always look for the best deal for the club, of course we should. But let’s face it, we are in no position at this period in time to be haggling over £800,000, especially when the club have just raked in £13.5m for the sale of Kristoffer Ajer to Brentford AND we are on the cusp of pulling £20m for Odsonne Edouard.

And please, I know we have a sell on clause that needs to be met to PSG but c’mon! Just get the business done!

But, we’ll probably miss out for the sake of less than £1m and end up back at square one with our rivals getting further and further away without a ball even being kicked.
