I remember the time Joey Barton signed for Rangers. At the time it looked like a great signing for them. English Premier League quality coming to Glasgow. But the problem with Barton wasn’t his footballing ability. It was his mouth.
Barton was always running it off and when he stepped into the cauldron of Celtic Park, our captain Scott Brown faced him down and Barton looked meekly at the floor as Broony shook his hand. Even before the first whistle was blown, the battle was over.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Scott Brown recalls that encounter and it was a classic telling of the tale, “Joey talks a great game and I showed him to play a great game. It’s as simple as that. He done the talking off the park and I did it out in the field. And at the end of the game,to be fair to him, he shook my hand and it was a battle.
“It was already in my head that I was winning this battle before the game even started because he was talking too much. He maybe done that a lot down in England.
“But he’s had a fantastic career, he went back down to the English Premier League for Burnley for a couple seasons. So it showed you what a top quality side that we had at the time that we were doing that to people that played in the English Premier League. It showed you how strong we were at the time.”
I remember that day. The handshake as the teams wished each other a good game and I also remember Barton admiring Broony’s boots as he shook his hand.
