The new signing of Matt O’Riley has certainly captured the imagination of not only the Celtic fans, but also the English football community.

Praised for his skill, commitment and technical ability, it’s these sort of comments that are making the Celtic fans eager to see the new man don the Hoops as soon as possible.

But what kind of player are Celtic getting really?

Well, Kieran Devlin at The Athletic wrote an excellent piece on the midfielder where he reviewed the progress of the 21 year old’s career and how decision he made for footballing reasons have eventually taken him to one of the biggest clubs in European football.

O’Riley said of his move to Paradise, “I was certain that I wasn’t just going to join a club if they paid me a certain amount of money if the style wasn’t right, I’m not that kind of guy.

“Ange said to me on the phone, ‘Of course, we want to win. The expectation is to win but to win the right way, playing proper football’.

“As soon as I was off the phone, I was ready to come to be honest.”

And it is the mark of the player, if you read the piece, at the steps he went through to get here.

But the hard work starts now and if the refereeing standards in Scotland don’t improve sharpish, O’Riley will soon find out that what he went through to earn his big move will be nothing to the tackles he will face on the pitch at being a Celtic player which prompted this fan to have a pop at the standards of Scottish referees.

John D said, “I also really liked the maturity in his interview, a switched on guy who will listen to Postecoglou and learn.

“Looking forward to seeing him.

“Just hope he has a stainless steel exoskeleton to deal with the ridiculous challenges being allowed by our referees.”

And how true is that?

With the Saturday night horror show still fresh in the minds of the players and fans, O’Riley will have to think fast on his feet if he is to avoid the same fate as Ideguchi and McGregor.
