Celtic are through to the Europa League despite a 1-0 defeat to Anderlecht in their final Champions League Group B tie at Celtic Park.

Defender Jozo Simunovic’s own-goal just after the hour was enough to separate the two sides at the end of the contest.

The Belgians had been required to win by three clear goals in order to replace their opponents as third-placed finishers in the table.

Home keeper Craig Gordon denied Sven Kurms during the early exchanges and was then tested by Adrien Trebel’s volley.

The Hoops weren’t producing much in reply and Trebel once more called Gordon into action – with manager Brendan Rodgers making a couple of alterations at the break as Tom Rogic and Olivier Ntcham replaced Stuart Armstrong and Scott Sinclair.

And Ntcham immediately struck wide while Moussa Dembele’s effort was deflected through to keeper Frank Boeckx, who also saved low from James Forrest on the edge of the area.

However, the visitors moved in front when Pieter Gerkens’ attempted header from Dennis Appiah’s 62nd minute cross deflected off Simunovic into his own net.

The Croatian responded with a sharp volley going over before Mikael Lustig headed Ntcham’s free-kick straight at Boeckx.

His opposite number Gordon later thwarted Sofiane Hanni, while Trebel also cleared the target ahead of Ntcham’s long-range reply again finding only the visiting goalkeeper.
