Celtic produced a vastly improved display before narrowly losing 2-1 to Bayern Munich in their Champions League Group B clash at Celtic Park.

Former Juventus striker Kingsley Coman took advantage of a defensive howler to earn the visitors the lead midway through the opening half.

But their opponents continued to offer a forceful challenge and Callum McGregor deservedly equalised from James Forrest’s superb assist with sixteen minutes remaining.

However, the bloodied Javi Martinez bravely powered in a fierce header just three minutes later to ultimately clinch the tie.

Stuart Armstrong side-footed wide at the far post following an early break from the excellent Forrest, while Moussa Dembele sliced behind after holding off Jerome Boateng.

Both Arturo Vidal and David Alaba were trying their luck from distance for the visitors before Dedryck Boyata covered well at the back.

But when goalkeeper Sven Ulreich’s long clearance was misjudged by Boyata, Coman escaped the advancing Craig Gordon to beat a couple of retreating defenders.

Corentin Tolisso then despatched a volley over the target, but it was Ulreich denying Armstrong after the break as the outstanding Forrest continued to prove a regular threat.

Nir Bitton’s free-kick certainly proved less difficult for him while opposite number Gordon was brought into action by David Alaba.

Celtic’s keeper next made a vital block with his foot when James Rodriguez appeared ready to double the visitors’ advantage.

Forrest’s reply was deflected wide – but he was unsurprisingly the architect behind a beautifully worked equaliser when surging into the heart of the Bayern defence and releasing McGregor to calmly tuck through Ulreich’s legs.

But amidst a crescendo of noise, Coman soon delivered from the left for Martinez to outjump Nir Bitton and plant an unstoppable header inside Gordon’s near post.
