Celtic are leading the race to sign Jason Denayer from Manchester City this summer, according to Belgian media outlet Nieuwsblad.

Having spent two of the last three seasons on loan at Turkish side Galatasaray, they were the club thought to be his destination again this summer with player and club seemingly happy with such a move.

However, Nieuwsblad report that they’ve failed to offer the money required to sign him, with Italian side Torino also refusing to commit to Manchester City’s demands, leaving Celtic as the most likely destination.

What the structure of such a deal would entail remains to be seen, but the player has already spent a season on loan at Celtic Park, so fans would likely be looking for an option to buy at least.

Shining in the heart of Ronny Deila’s defence four years ago now, many Celtic fans had tipped Denayer for big things on his return to City, but he’s failed to truly establish himself at any club.

A return to Celtic Park could be great for both the player and the club, especially with Dedryck Boyata being on the verge of an exit.

The Hoops badly need to sign a couple of defenders in the last couple of weeks of the transfer window and given the apparent lack of other targets, Denayer could be the best option.

What do you make of the potential Denayer signing? Let us know in the comments…
