Greek lightning Georgios Samaras still believes Celtic can win the title, stating “we will see where the helicopter lands on the final day of the season”.

The former Manchester City striker scored Celtic’s second goal during last night’s 2-1 win against Dundee United at Parkhead – a game the club’s official site describes as “thrilling” when the reality was “desperately holding on until the final whistle”.

Despite having a manager whose tactics have probably thrown the league away and a board who genuinely seem to think having green tartan shorts on an “international” kit is a good idea (more on that later), Celtic do still have an outside chance on securing a fourth-successive title and at least Samaras is keeping his head up.

Samaras told the official site: “We can handle the pressure. We believe in ourselves and in the team. We believe we can win our last two games and we will see where the helicopter lands on the final day of the season. I hope it lands at Celtic Park.

“We must win our last two matches ? we had a target of nine points in mind and we have now got three. Dundee United are a very good team as they showed and it’s very difficult to play them at Tannadice.

“We have dropped points to them and so have Rangers ? maybe that will happen again. But maybe Rangers will drop points against Hibs at Easter Road. You never know.”

When this season finishes, no matter what the final outcome, there will be a lot of questions for the club to answer, including “why, after three years of success and dominance, did we not wrap the league up with plenty of time to spare?” It’s hard to imagine Strachan remaining at the club but the aforementioned green tartan was even harder to imagine.

Two games to go and then the mentions of Craig Levein, David O’Leary and Sven-Goran Eriksson can begin in earnest – or, in fact, any manager who can use the large group of players, at all levels, Celtic currently have to actually impress on the pitch.
