Celtic transfer target Filip Benkovic made his debut for Leicester City last night, coming off the bench in a 4-0 League Cup win over Fleetwood Town.

The Croatian U21 international joined the English Premier League side a few weeks ago but prior to last night had only featured for their U23s side.

The Daily Mail reported earlier this week that Celtic were lining up a loan move for the player, but does his inclusion on Tuesday night suggest he is in the immediate plans of Claude Puel after all?

At the very least, being involved in first-team action so close to the transfer deadline isn’t an amazing sign from our perspective.

The player came off the bench in 62nd minute for Wes Morgan, making his English football debut in front of his own supporters.

As a temporary solution to our defensive crisis at the moment, we could probably do worse than Benkovic, especially at this late stage of the window, but would fans accept yet another young loan signing from the Premier League?

Hopefully by the close of play on Friday supporters are delighted with the business done by Celtic, with or without the 21-year-old.

  • I don’t know how good this guy Benkovic is but short-term loans in an attempt to solve what has been a very serious long-term problem i.e. central defence is nothing but a cowboy approach to resolving the issue. If our coaching staff really rate him but Leicester won’t sell, then at the very least get him in on a two-year loan with an option to buy.

  • Benkovic is a really hot young prospect and frankly a one year loan is unlikely a two year one having paid £13m for him a few weeks ago is ridiculous.
Celtic need to start paying the market value in fees and wages for players or they will fall further behind the bigger teams in Europe.
Benkovic is arguably 6th choice CB at City but we decided £13m and £50k per week was fair.
