“Celtic don’t have a lot of money” – Sky Pundits bizarre claim and player valuation

I find these kind of pundits very strange.

They seem to have an opinion of Celtic or Scottish football without actually researching what they are talking about.

For example, I am a Celtic blogger, if someone asked me to write a piece or offer comment on a team from the English Premier League I would do my due diligence and make sure I knew what I was talking about.

Even for this blog, I need to make sure all my facts about our club are spot on (even though I think my knowledge is pretty good) because the Celtic fans are probably the most knowledgable fans in the world when it comes to talking about their club and if you have something wrong, they WILL pick you up for it.

Especially spelling and grammar. You know who you are!

But for Gabby Agbonlahor, he seems to specialise in this when it comes to Celtic. I’ve written about this many times before.

Speaking to Football Insider, Agbonlahor said, “I’ll say this, what I’ve got to praise Celtic for is their recruitment.

“Celtic don’t have a lot of money.

“Celtic have gone out and got four Japanese players and two of them, so far, look like absolute bargains.

“I’m sure they’ll be going back to Japan to look for more because they look like really talented players.

“For Hatate to perform like that in his first derby game in such a tense atmosphere was outstanding.

“They were so cheap. Given his performances, Hatate has probably tripled in value already.

“It’s good business from Celtic.”

The first claim I have a real issue with. Celtic don’t have a lot of money. Yeah, apart from the fees raked in by selling Edouard, Christie, Ajer and Frimpong and another 50k season tickets sold, he’s right.

We don’t have a lot of money.

As for Hatate. He’s only worth £4m now? Please. He’s only just got started and unless he at least doubles that figure then the former Aston Villa man needs to seriously either stop talking Celtic or, a the very least, do some light reading on the club.

Well written. I agree 100 percent.
I wish the idiots would stop their drivel paid for by TV and actually have something nice to say about Celtic.
It seems that everyone has to knock our Great Club.
They are idiots (I would use a lot of stronger language if I wasn’t on the net) Everyone put Celtic down and wrote them off this season and because Ange has turned it around those same people have to disparage us and the Great job the manager, players and all the rest of the staff are doing.
It seems in Scottish football the better you are the worst you are treated.
the rangers are always made out to be better and the sycophantic support from the media, papers and others is quite repulsive. End of rant.

  • Paul says:

Compared to EPL clubs celtic don’t have a lot money, that’s just a fact.
We paid £1.38m for Hatate, so if his price is doubling every 4 games we are on to winner

  • Pan says:

Absolutely Paul. I don’t think Gabby was being unjust here. He was simply stating that we don’t have access to the riches of the Premiership or the other big league clubs.

I think Paddy is being a little too quick to react here and maybe should stop and try to see the point of view of Gabby Agbonlahor, who in my opinion has not criticised Celtic here, but praised them

Hi Pan, Thanks for reading again. Really enjoy your contribution to the site. You would be excellent in the forum!
I guess my main point was his valuation of Hatate. I suppose the headline and how I wrote it doesn’t convey that.
Probably because I love defending my team against these pundits that think they know the club when they really haven’t got a clue.

  • Stafford says:

Great signings by Celtic and Ange. Their countries of origin are unimportant and no better man than Ange to introduce them to the Celtic way. I very rarely pay any attention to the comments of ex players / footballers that have little knowledge of the Scottish game.
