Celtic are facing strong competition from Turkish side Fenerbahce in the race to sign Manchester City midfielder Douglas Luiz.

The Scottish Sun reported on Tuesday that the Hoops were in the running to sign the young Brazilian, who City signed for a reported £10m just last year.

The proposed deal would be a temporary one.

The 20-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Spanish City affiliate Girona, can not play for the English champions after being refused a work permit to play in the English Premier League.

However, reports from Turkey also emerged yesterday that suggest Fenerbahce had agreed a deal in principle to sign the youth international.

How reliable any of these reports are remains to be seen, but it’s unlikely to be smooth sailing if the Hoops are indeed interested in the player to bolster Brendan Rodgers’ midfield options.

After the departure of Stuart Armstrong to Southampton, Celtic are looking a little light in the middle of the park, with no real direct back-up available for Scott Brown and Olivier Ntcham.

Whether it’s Luiz or another, you’d expect the club to be in the market for a player in that position before Friday’s deadline.
