Scott Brown has revealed he almost left Celtic in 2010, with both Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur showing interest in the player back then.

He’s gone on to forge a legendary trophy-laden Hoops career, but had his situation under then manager Tony Mowbray regressed just a little bit more he could have left for English football long ago.

That’s what he revealed to The Daily Record over the weekend, opening up on a dicey period under the failed Hoops boss.

As quoted by the paper, the Celtic captain said:

It hit me like a hammer when he told me to find a new club. I didn’t want to leave. I enjoyed playing for Celtic and all my family were here. But now I’m being told to find myself a new club.

I had to get back on the phone and tell people I think I might be free to leave in January. Then all these offers start coming in and I’m thinking to myself, ‘Well, whatever happens happens’.

I had an offer from Newcastle. There had been also interest from Harry Redknapp at Spurs and I was waiting to find out if he was still wanting to do something. So I’m sitting there thinking if I should go or not.

Ultimately he was brought back into the fold by Mowbray and actual made captain by his former Hibs manager, but the fact he was at one point told he could leave is a fairly shocking reveal from the player, especially in the wake of what he’s achieved at Celtic Park since.

The seven-in-a-row success, boosted by a double treble and an unbeaten season are almost unimaginable without the 33-year-old, who at times has kept the Hoops going in a way like no other player at the club in the last decade plus.

He’s written himself permanently into Celtic history and fans should be thankful that mishandling the player back in 2009 didn’t end up biting the club.
