A statue dedicated to Celtic legend Bobby Lennox was unveiled in his Ayrshire hometown on Sunday, with a huge crowd turning out to pay tribute to one of the finest players to ever grace Scottish Football.

The Saltcoats ceremony brought residents and Hoops supporters out in their droves, with everyone eager to see the new statue in all its glory after a lengthy fundraising campaign.

Others in attendance included fellow Lisbon Lion John Clark and Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell.

Celtic were quick to pay their own tribute too, with a story on their website summing up why he is held in the highest regard as a footballer and as a person.

The Hoops said on the official website: “Bobby Lennox is one of Celtic’s greatest players, part of Jock Stein’s famous Lisbon Lions side that won the European Cup in 1967.

His list of achievements is extraordinary – 25 major honours during a near 19-year career with the Hoops, making 586 appearances and scoring 277 goals, a tally only bettered by Jimmy McGrory.

Yet, despite his incredible success as a Celtic player, Bobby Lennox has always been a humble and modest man, no doubt proud of his achievements but never one to boast of them.”

It’s a fantastic permanent legacy for one of Celtic’s finest sons and we’re delighted to see so many turn out and give their support to the 75-year-old.
