Celtic have been linked with a move for Wigan Athletic attacking midfielder Nick Powell in the closing stages of the summer transfer window.

TEAMtalk report that the Hoops are one of a number of teams chasing his signature before Friday’s deadline, keeping a close eye on his situation after a lightning start to the 2018/19 season.

The website reports that Middlesbrough are the team most hopeful of capturing him, with Wigan willing to sell for a fee of around £5m given the player has less than a year left on his contract.

Technicalities would mean any English Football League sides would have to sign him on a loan basis until January, with a commitment to make his move permanent then.

The 24-year-old started his career at Crewe Alexandra before winning a big move to Manchester United in 2012. Sadly for the player that switch didn’t quite work out for him and he eventually joined Wigan on a free transfer in 2016.

Since then he’s been key for the Championship new boys, scoring 15 goals last season and helping them get promoted to the second-tier.

So far this season he’s shown lethal form, scoring three goals and creating four assists in just four matches.

That’s an attacking contribution from midfield that would go down a treat at Celtic, especially since Stuart Armstrong left the club this summer.

Will we see the Hoops make a late move for the player?
