The transfer window silly season is truly underway after Celtic were linked with an £18m move for Uruguayan international Giorgian de Arrascaeta this week.

The Sun have reported that both Newcastle and the Hoops are interested in signing the player, with Brendan Rodgers said to have sent scouts to watch him in Copa Libertadores action earlier this year.

However, the report also claims any buying club would have to pay his £18m valuation, set by Brazilian club Cruzeiro after three years service.

The player featured twice for Uruguay in this summer’s World Cup but has since returned to league action in Brazil, scoring in his most recent match against Atletico Paranaense.

With 20 goals and 13 assists in his 90 appearances for the Brazilian side, a move for the playmaking midfielder would certainly be exciting for supporters, but the chances of Celtic spending £18m on a player anytime soon seems remote, even if we end up selling two or three of our biggest stars this summer.

The investment in Odsonne Edouard recently seems to be about as far as we’ll go in the transfer market for the foreseeable future and deals like that represent the next level for Celtic in their transfer cycle. Making moves for £18m players seems a few years away at best.
