Celtic are interested in signing up Portsmouth centre-back Jack Whatmough on a free transfer, battling with the likes of Rangers and Aberdeen, according to The Sun.

FIFA rules mean we could bring in the 22-year-old for a compensation fee much lower than a figure set by an English tribunal if he were to move within his homeland without club agreement, similar to the kind of deal that resulted in Moussa Dembele’s arrival a few years ago.

His contract is set to expire at the end of this season and The Sun say that Celtic are amongst the front-runners for his signature.

With 90 appearances for Portsmouth in English League Two and League One action, he doesn’t have experience at the highest level but he wouldn’t be the first rough diamond to attract the interest of Brendan Rodgers in his time at Celtic.

He’s emerged as a consistent performer for Pompey this season, playing in 22 of their 26 matches and helping guide them to the top of the table ahead of Luton Town and sleeping giants Sunderland.

As a budget signing he could be worth a punt and every fan knows we need to find an answer at centre-back over the six months with Filip Benkovic set to return to parent club Leicester City and Dedryck Boyata certain to leave too.

Is Whatmough the answer?
