Celtic have reportedly made an approach to sign Wigan Athletic defender Nathan Byrne , after turning down the chance to sign Moses Odubajo this week.

That’s according to Football Insider, who report exclusively via sources that Byrne is high on Brendan Rodgers’ wanted this list summer.

The right-back position has clearly become a key priority for the club.

Hull City defender Moses Odubajo was spotted in Austria last week during the club’s pre-season training camp, with the manager admitting that talks had taken place with the player’s representatives. However, that move has now fallen through and the player is now training with former side Brentford.

It seems that Rodgers is wasting no time in moving on to other targets and Byrne apparently ticks the boxes to compete for a place with Mikael Lustig on the Hoops’ right flank.

Rated at £450,000 by Transfermarkt, Byrne has spent the vast majority of his career so far in English League One with a variety of clubs, although does have some Championship experience with Wolves and current club Wigan.

He was a big part of the side that stormed to the League One title last season, making 44 league appearances for the Latics. He also featured prominently in their extended FA Cup run, knocking Manchester City out before eventually being beaten by Premier League side Southampton in the quarter-finals.

With eight assists last term, it’s clear he’s a player who enjoys getting forward and that could add a new dimension to the current Celtic side, with Lustig drawing criticism for underwhelming performances last term.

We’ll be watching closely to see how this transfer rumour pans out.
