Lennon looks to Championshp Swede as left-back search takes familiar turn

|

Neil Lennon could be considering turning his attention away from Charlton Athletic’s Alfie Doughty with the news that Celtic could be set to make a bid for Bristol City’s Niclas Eliasson, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

Celtic Vital reported on a potential move for the Swede earlier in the year with the 24-year old into the last year of his contract with the Championship side.

He is a natural left footer and has played most of his football in midfield however, he is capable of operating anywhere down the left flank – think Jonny Hayes but more refined – and would be an ideal option for wing-back, given his attacking ability.

The left-back/left wing-back role remains the only obvious area that needs to be strengthened by Celtic with just Greg Taylor as the only obvious choice, James Forrest has filled in but even playing him on the right-hand side is picking a square peg in a round hole.

As well as Doughty and Eliasson, The Daily Record reports that Aarhus left back Casper Hojer is also a potential target, at least the recruitment team has identified that more strength in depth is needed.

Celtic have started the season well, even if individual performances might not have been up to the usual standard, and are a game in hand away from returning to the top of the league, although the Champions League exit was a blow, a win over Sarajevo would ensure group stage football for another season, securing a left sided defender is a must if we are to see yet another 60 game season – and a reminder that none of us want to see Callum McGregor pushed out there again.
