Celtic have returned to Hibernian with an offer for John McGinn that matches the money that Aston Villa were prepared to pay to bring him to Birmingham this summer, according to The Herald.

The Hoops have also offered McGinn similar personal terms as Villa, thought to be a whopping £23,000-a-week, to avoid seeing him leave for English football rather than make the switch to Glasgow, say the paper.

After having three previous bids for the midfielder rejected, it’s a significant development and gives the player the decision to decide his own future – the English Championship or the Scottish champions.

It’s clear that Brendan Rodgers sees the player as an important midfield acquisition, where he would likely compete with Olivier Ntcham and Scott Brown for first-team places.

With Callum McGregor utilised further forward and Tom Rogic exclusively playing behind the striker, there is room for McGinn to get plenty of first-team football.

The English transfer window closes on Thursday so it seems this long-term saga is about to come to a head imminently and it’ll be interesting to see whether Celtic have done enough at the last minute to secure the player’s services.
