Celtic on European Super League alert!

|

Celtic are on “alert” as Europe’s top clubs meet to discuss a breakaway “Super League” in a bid to revamp the popularity of European competition throughout the Continent.

Italian news outlet, La Stampa, reported that the President’s of both Real Madrid (Florentino Perez)  and Juventus (Andrea Agnelli) met in Turin for a top-level meeting where the future of football was at the centre of the discussions.

Agnelli is also the president of Eca, the association of European clubs. Both Perez and Agnelli have been working to build a Superleague with the strongest and most popular clubs in European football to increase it’s popularity and, of course, to further increase television and endorsement revenue. The meeting lasted about three hours and took place yesterday morning.

It is not the first time the idea of a breakaway from UEFA’s flagship tournament has been discussed as many clubs agree that the format is stale and needs revamped.

The positive for Celtic is that the Juve President, Agnelli, has already stated that Celtic should be granted automatic entry into any new set up as previous winners of the European Cup back in 1967.

However, any revamp of the Champions League format is likely to include names from nations with bigger TV audiences meaning clubs like former winners Ajax, Feyenoord, PSV Eindhoven and Celtic may miss out.
