Celtic are planning on holding fresh talks with defender Dedryck Boyata when he returns from the World Cup over the next couple of weeks, with Brendan Rodgers hoping to convince him that his long-term future lies in Glasgow.

That’s according to The Daily Record, who report that initial talks with the player prior to the tournament in Russia failed to end in agreement.

The paper say that clubs such as Lazio and Fulham are also interested in his services and with less than a year left on his contract at Celtic Park that puts the club in a less than ideal position.

There’s no doubting that the Belgian has enjoyed his football working under Brendan Rodgers, but with bigger leagues apparently knocking on his door, is he set for an exit?

The 27-year-old isn’t due back to Celtic training for another fortnight after Belgium’s third place finish at the World Cup and the club are likely to treat his contract talks as a priority heading into August.

The Hoops have yet to invest in any defensive reinforcements this summer despite it being the weakest area of the team last term and fans have been crying out for the club to pursue a first-team quality centre-back for ages now.

While retaining Boyata would obviously be a bonus, hopefully the club are working on bringing in competition too.

Do you want Dedryck Boyata to sign a new contract? Do Celtic need more defenders? Let us know in the comments below…
