Celtic are closing in on a deal to sign defender Filip Benkovic this evening, after the player was spotted taking part in first-team training earlier today.

Although he hasn’t been announced by club, you would expect that to come any minute.

Brendan Rodgers described him as a “highly-rated young centre-half with a big presence in both boxes” to the BBC on Thursday night, after the Hoops successfully progressed past FK Suduva.

Benkovic was also in attendance for that one and it would appear only small details need to be confirmed for him to complete a loan move to the Hoops from Leicester City.

The Foxes signed him in July for a reported fee of £13m, so it’s rather odd he’s been allowed to leave so soon, but clearly Claude Puel feels he has enough depth to cope without the 21-year-old.

Emerging as a first-team regular at Dinamo Zagreb, Benkovic has excellent playing experience despite only being 21 years old and should have the quality to compete for places in the Hoops defensive line.

He’ll become the sixth signing of the summer after Scott Bain, Odsonne Edouard, Emilio Izaguirre, Daniel Arzani and Youssouf Mulumbu.

Here’s hoping it’s all announced sooner rather than later.
