Celtic’s Scott Brown has been confirmed as the new Scotland captain ahead of their friendly with Estonia on Wednesday evening.

“He already knows what it’s like to be a captain” – Gordon Strachan

But team-mate James Forrest won’t be involved after returning to the Scottish champions.

“He already knows what it’s like to be a captain with pressure and that made him favourite,” new national boss Gordon Strachan told Sky Sports. “Young James [Forrest] went back because I felt it might be too much to play two games back to back for him. So he’s away to Celtic and they’ll look after him there.”

Others forced out of the squad through injury are Wigan Athletic’s Gary Caldwell and Grant Hanley of Blackburn Rovers, while Leeds United striker Ross McCormack has withdrawn due to illness.

Scotland squad:

Goalkeepers: Matt Gilks (Blackpool), David Marshall (Cardiff), Allan McGregor (Besiktas)

Defenders: Phil Bardsley (Sunderland), Christophe Berra (Wolves), Alan Hutton (Mallorca), Russell Martin (Norwich), Charlie Mulgrew (Celtic), Lee Wallace (Rangers), Andy Webster (Hearts)

Midfielders: Charlie Adam (Stoke), Scott Brown (Celtic), Chris Burke (Birmingham), Kris Commons (Celtic), James McArthur (Wigan), James Morrison (West Brom), Matt Philips (Blackpool), Robert Snodgrass (Norwich)

Forwards: Steven Fletcher (Sunderland), Jamie Mackie (QPR), Shaun Maloney (Wigan), Kenny Miller (Vancouver), Steven Naismith (Everton), Jordan Rhodes (Blackburn)
