Celtic star valued at £30m as pundit claims “astonishing transformation”

|

Former Aberdeen and Republic of Ireland forward, Noel Whelan, has made a sensational claim about Celtic’s joint top scorer, Ryan Christie, in an interview with Football Insider.

Whelan has been impressed with the Scotland international’s form this season and the development that has seen him go from on-loan outcast to a key player.

What has Whelan said?

Whelan was asked about Christie’s form and his importance for Celtic and Scotland and he said:

“Ryan Christie is becoming pivotal for club and country. You look at him now winning games for Celtic and Scotland and you have to say it’s an astonishing transformation in just over a year”.

“His career at Celtic was going nowhere at one point, Brendan Rodgers didn’t appear to rate him. Now, wow, you’re looking at a £30million player”.

“It would take a ridiculous sum for another club to buy him now. I’ve seen players with less ability than Christie go for more than £30million”.

“It would need to be a massively attractive proposition to tempt him away from Celtic”.

So is Whelan right?

Christie has been in sparkling form this season and is now one of the first names on the team-sheet at Parkhead. With 12 goals and 7 assists in 24 games so far, he has been pivotal in Celtic’s impressive start to the season.

Whelan is right in that Christie looked like he was out the door following nearly two seasons spent at Aberdeen but he is now as important to the team as Callum McGregor, James Forrest and Odsonne Edouard.

Who is worth more to Celtic?

Callum McGregor

Callum McGregor

James Forrest

Ryan Christie

McGregor was linked with a move to Leicester City in the summer and was valued at upwards of £20m, with Kieran Tierney leaving for £25m, Christie deserves to be spoken about in a similar bracket.

Attacking midfielders that are a goal threat are the modern day “number 10s” with most teams playing with a solitary striker, a midfielder that can score goals and create chances is worth a lot of money, especially if they are proven at European and international level.

To justify a fee of £30m, Christie will have to continue his form over a longer period of time but he is certainly heading in the right direction. Hoops fans will be hoping his stock continues to rise and in doing so secures 9-in-a-row.
