Celtic’s goalkeeper quest has been strangely quiet of late as the Hoops get prepared to jet off to France and continue their pre-season preparations with just Scott Bain as a recognised senior stopper.

But, one name that refuses to go away is that of Joe Hart and former England international, Kevin Phillips, speaking to Football Insider, has heard that a deal is a real possibility if Neil Lennon’s move for Fraser Forster truly is dead in the water.

“It is an area that Celtic are looking for.

“If Forster does not go there I hear that Joe Hart has a chance of signing. He may have something already lined up.”

Although his form over the last couple of seasons hasn’t been the best of a long and illustrious career, the same could have been said for Forster before returning to Parkhead and rediscovering the consistency that made him a contender for the England number one slot.

Hart would represent and experienced pair of hands and with 75 caps to his name, he is more than used to having to fill a highly pressurised role, Lennon would also be happy knowing that any drop in form from the former Manchester City man could be covered by the dependable Bain – who became an international himself after displacing Craig Gordon two seasons ago.

The Hoops gaffer would have wanted back-up – or a new first choice – signed before the trip to France, however, with the season starting on August 1, there is now an ever closer deadline to which he will want to secure another experienced keeper, or face starting the new campaign with his fingers permanently crossed.
