Celtic are interested in signing Liverpool midfielder Pedro Chirivella before the end of the transfer window after the player’s failed move to Rosenborg this week, according to Goal.com.

The 21-year-old was all set to join the Norwegian champions after they agreed a £3.5m deal with the Reds, but were unable to complete the transfer after discussions with the player himself.

Now Goal.com say that the player is keen to reunite with Brendan Rodgers, who gave him his professional debut in 2015 when still in charge of Liverpool.

Despite failing to make the breakthrough at Anfield, has spent the last season and a half on loan in Eredivisie with Willem II and Go Ahead Eagles, making over 50 appearances in Dutch football.

A central midfielder who enjoys the defensive side of the game, he could be a solid alternative to John McGinn after he confirmed his move to Aston Villa on Wednesday despite Celtic’s long-term interest.

Rodgers clearly feels he needs a bit of midfield depth added to the squad after the departure of Stuart Armstrong and Chirivella appears to be an affordable and quality option.

Clubs like Swansea and Nottingham Forest were also said to be interested in the player but after the English transfer window show yesterday the path is clear for Celtic to make their move.
