Celtic are interested in signing Mexican international Edson Alvarez ahead of this summer’s transfer window, according to reports in his homeland.
Outlet Nacion Deportes say that the Hoops will have to compete with PSV and Inter Milan for his signature after a number of stellar performances in the Mexican top-flight.
Just 21-years-old, but already amassing 100 appearances for club CF America and 20 caps for the national team, he is thought to have immense potential at centre-back.
Despite his young age, Alvarez is already making quite a name for himself. He scored two goals in the Liga MX Apertura final in December, delivering his club’s 13th league title.
He was also named in the 2018 CONCACAF team of the year alongside the likes of Keylor Navas and Hirving Lozano.
As we know, Celtic are on the hunt for quality defenders this summer with Dedryck Boyata likely leaving on a free transfer and Filip Benkovic heading back to parent club Leicester City.
Boyata has been absolutely key in the first-team this season and we really need to have a succession plan in place to replace his influence on the team.
Signing a proven, but young, international defender is the ideal scenario and Alvarez certainly ticks all the boxes.
Whether we can compete with clubs on the continent remains to be seen but an offer of almost guaranteed first-team football in a physical European league, with the opportunity to play in UEFA Champions League, is surely an attractive proposition for an ambitious young player like the Mexican.
