Celtic will have to battle two English clubs to sign £2.25m-rated talent

Former Hoops striker Gary Hooper is attracting interest from Aston Villa and Fulham, as well as Celtic, according to The Scottish Sun.

The 31-year-old is looking for a new club next season after leaving Sheffield Wednesday at the end of their English Championship campaign.

The paper report Neil Lennon is keen on adding the forward to the Celtic squad this summer, if he gets the permanent job, but will have serious competition to secure his signature.

They reckon Fulham, who will be challenging at the top end of the English second-tier next term, are looking at the player alongside Aston Villa, who are still hoping to gain promotion to the Premier League through the play-off system.

The £2.25m-rated Hooper scored 80 goals and assisted 30 more in 138 appearances for Celtic during Lennon’s first spell at the club, proving to be one of the most prolific strikers at Celtic in recent years.

Although he’s struggled with injuries recently he could be an excellent squad option in support of Odsonne Edouard as we push towards nine-in-a-row.

On a free transfer it makes plenty of sense, even if it will be a move seen as a backwards step for many fans.
