Celtic have offered a contract to American defensive prospect Andrew Gutman, according to The Athletic.

A product of the college system across the Atlantic, Gutman is said to be weighing up the offer, with the report claiming he is likely to sign up with the Scottish champions.

A natural left-back, it seems he would arrive as the new direct cover to Kieran Tierney, with Emilio Izaguirre’s future at the club increasingly uncertain.

The Honduran re-signed for the club last summer but has failed to really impress in his nine appearances so far this term and wasn’t even trusted to start against Rangers in the recent derby despite Tierney’s absence.

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, we could be entering the final days of Izaguirre’s time at Celtic.

Gutman is a rated player in the United States and last year was the winner of the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy, an award handed out to the top college ‘soccer’ star in the country, previously won by the likes of Alexi Lalas, Brad Friedel and Claudio Reyna.

He’s been in Scotland recently, with Rangers taking him on trial in December.
