Club statement is devoid of ideas and answers. Just like the first team

Finally, after weeks of watching poor performances, being eliminated from three cup competitions before December and meekly handing Rangers an eleven point gap (albeit with two games in hand), the club, or Peter Lawwell, issued a  statement tonight.

What sparked the statement? The loss in the Glasgow Derby with no shots at goal? Silence. The 4-1 drubbing at home to Sparta Prague? *Crickets* The dropped points at Pittodrie and Easter Road? *Checks hearing aid*. Or was it the football lesson we received in Prague? I’ve got it! It was the 2-0 home defeat to Ross County which ended a domestic cup run of 35 games unbeaten!  Still. Nothing.

It took Celtic fans to turn up at Parkhead after the Ross County debacle for the board to sit up and take notice and you know what? They had better have just stayed silent as the statement was empty, unoriginal and a weak call to arms.  It’s like sending in reinforcements after the battle has been lost, except luckily for us, the war is still there to be won.

I’ll repeat again, the actions that the fans took that night was wrong. Chanting about Lennon in that manner, violence against the police and gathering in large crowds during a global pandemic  cannot be condoned but the boards silence and inaction whilst presiding over this period of shocking results left fans feeling they had no alternative but to take that course of action.

The statement asks for “strength in adversity” and denied “any complacency whatsoever”. These quotes are much of a muchness and what the Celtic fans are seeing on the park refutes Lawwell’s complacency claim. To ask Celtic fans for “strength in adversity” is a slap in the face to those that have shelled out hundreds of pounds in season book money for games they will never see live and for record merchandising sales by purchasing the new team kits and nine in a row memorabilia.

For the first time since 2010 Celtic fans won’t see Europe after Christmas. The League Cup has gone and it seems like the league is also slipping away. This statement addressed nothing but to tick the box that says “try to appease fans”.

Lennon must get results, and soon. Asking for a result in the San Siro may be a stretch too far but there needs to be signs of an improved performance from the team or Thursday is going to be another long European night for the club.
