Davie Provan is a strange pundit. For a former Celtic player, I have yet to see or hear him say anything positive about his former side in these last few weeks.

You would think, that after winning the four games after only conceding one goal, Provan would give credit where it is due.

He has done nothing but slate Carl Starfelt in the last few months and now that the big Swede has hit a decent run of form, there is nothing from him to recognise that.

Instead, he STILL questions the Hoops defenders and uses a very strange stat to try and back up his assertions.

Speaking on Go Radio, Provan said, “What I would say about their defensive record, in the Motherwell game, Motherwell didn’t have a shot on target and yesterday St Johnstone didn’t have a shot on target.

“Now you could say that’s down to good defending.

“Now that might be down to good defending but I’m not sure that Celtic backline has been properly tested.

Ok. Later in the article Provan talks about how he likes to listen to Ange as he speaks a lot of sense.

Did he just miss the part where Ange has stated publicly that he doesn’t rate clean sheets as a testament of a defensive performance?

But he does go on to say, “And I think once they go to Leverkusen,  I think we’ll have a better idea of just how much progress they’ve made.

“They need to get Julien back. He is going to be huge.

“And I saw Ange talking this week, I always read his quotes.

“I always listen to him he makes a lot of sense, saying we need to get at least a couple in during the window and I’m sure he will already have identify one or two to come in and bolster that squad.”

So to use Davie’s argument of clean sheets, does a clean sheet against the Hungarian champions, Ferencvaros and Dutch side AZ Alkmaar not count?

There is genuinely no pleasing people.
