Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell insists Dutch centre-back Virgil van Dijk should remain with the club for another year.

“I wouldn’t have thought anything will happen with Fraser until he is back from the World Cup” – Peter Lawwell

Lawwell believes another season of European action can only benefit the 22-year-old defender and help attract bigger clubs and greater money.

However, he also admits that England goalkeeper Fraser Forster could leave Celtic Park after the World Cup.

“We’d start by saying we don’t want anyone to go then if things develop we want to hold on to them as long as possible,” Lawwell explained to the Daily Record. “Which would be to the end of the Champions League qualifiers.

“I wouldn’t have thought anything will happen with Fraser until he is back from the World Cup,” he continued. “But with Virgil there has been nothing so that is good news. One year is far too early for him. He needs another year in the Champions League. He has to develop here.”
