As Scotland kick off to face Moldova in what is becoming an already failed World Cup qualification campaign, one player  that is still to make his mark on the international side is Celtic midfield star, David Turnbull.

Turnbull has been an ever present in the Celtic side since last November and has played in big European nights for the hoops as well as the biggest derby in the world.

Which makes Mark Guidi’s assessment and explanation of why he’s not a first pick in the Scotland midfield that bit stranger.

Speaking on Go Radio, Guidi gave a baffling opinion on why he thinks Scotland boss Steve Clarke, is right not to start the Hoops midfielder, “He’s a talented footballer, but he’s young. And you look at big game experience he’s got a bit, but not a lot.

“So do I think David Turnbull’s a starter? No. Do I think he’s a starter anytime soon? No, no I don’t.

“I think players we’ve got in that area will be ahead of him.

“And look at his performance against against Rangers, last Sunday, was a good performance, but could be better.

“I think it’s his cuteness, know how and how to be bit flyer on the pitch. Anticipate a wee bit more what’s coming and being ready and that will come with bigger games and the more experience.

“Last season was his first big season for Celtic, so he’s learning. It’s a major achievement for him to have forced his way into the Scotland squad already.

“As a Scotland player he will have a big contribution to make for sure, but he’s not a starter for me.”

So if that’s the case, then why does Billy Gilmour get a start ahead of Turnbull? If we are basing his reasoning for starting down to not having enough big game experience and his age, that kind of makes Gilmour’s starting place a bit redundant does it not?

Turnbull offers so much to Celtic from the midfield and could definitely do a job for his country but no doubt Clarke will continue with his tried and tested players for the remainder of the campaign.

Remind me again how many games Scotland have won in their last nine fuxtures?
