As Celtic prepare to face AZ Alkmaar in the second leg of their Europa League qualifier in Holland, the Dutch press have given Ange Postecoglou’s men a timely transfer boost as they report that Georgios Giakoumakis will not be making the switch to Werder Bremen.

The report, from De Limburger, says that the German second tier club were not willing to match the salary the Greek striker was demanding and this has put the blocks on the deal.

Vital Celtic reported two days ago that the Hoops were willing to meet Giakoumakis £12,000 per week salary but the twenty six goal striker was holding out for a move to Germany.

Venlo’s CEO Marko Bogers did confirm that Bremen and Celtic made an approach and warned that more clubs could be circling, “Celtic and Werder Bremen have officially approached us.

“But there are more clubs now showing interest – so the game isn’t over yet. We expect even more clubs to be in touch.”

The news will come as a massive boost to Ange as the Celtic boss reportedly made a personal phone call to his fellow Greek compatriot to try and convince him to make the move to Paradise and it  looks like tonight, the big Aussie gaffer is a step closer to signing his target.

With Giakoumakis price tag set at £2.2m, the move doesn’t seem as though it will depend on Celtic receiving a fee for Odsonne Edouard, so if he does decide to sign on the dotted line, negotiations should  be fairly straight forward.
