Celtic suffered their first league defeat of the season as Inverness Caledonian Thistle consolidated their early lead at the top of the table.

An unfortunate own-goal from Eoghan O’Connell midway through the second-half eventually separated the teams after Nir Bitton had already struck the crossbar for the visitors.

Greg Tansey saw a trio of early efforts while Kris Commons and Leigh Griffiths were wide at the other end before Efe Ambrose forced Dean Brill to turn over.

The home keeper was also called into action by Teemu Pukki (twice) and Commons but was though beaten as Bitton’s shot came back off the woodwork.

However, Gary Warren’s headed reply from Ryan Christie’s corner was then cleared off the line by Charlie Mulgrew.

Josh Meekings’ header cleared the target following the restart and Griffiths replied straight at Brill, until Watkins’ cross was parried by Lukasz Zaluska and deflected into the net off O’Connell.

Christie soon had another opportunity but struck wide and Zaluska turned aside from Nick Ross – with substitute Anthony Stokes wayward at the other end.
