Sunday’s transfer gossip bought little excitement – unless the prospect of Celtic signing Nikola Petkovic or Sean St Ledger is worth putting the champagne on ice for.

Left-back Petkovic plays for Eintracht Frankfurt and could be available for around £1.5million, according to the News of the World. The 23-year-old, who has only been at his currently club since January, has seven caps for Serbia Under-21s.

The article read: “Celts watched the Eintracht Frankfurt defender in action for Serbia’s Under-21 side against Italy at the European Championships in Sweden on Tuesday night.”

Interestingly, on the wider issue of where financially-constrained clubs like Celtic can find players, the article quoted a “Celtic source” as suggesting the days of unearthing young talent at such tournaments are all but over.

According to the “source”: “Twenty years ago you could come to a competition like this and scout the best of the young talent from around Europe. But the majority of these players are now well-known and many of them are already with western clubs.”

Preston’s Sean St Ledger would also be available for around £1.5million, according to the Sunday Mail – but the 24-year-old central defender, who has two caps for Ireland, has also been linked with Burnley and Everton.

It’s worth noting St Ledger can provide cover for numerous positions, as he has played at both left-back and right-back in his career, as well as a stint as a midfielder with Peterborough before is switch to Preston.

However, even if both rumours may happen (and the second one may have more to do with Mowbray trying to sign St Ledger for West Brom than anything else!) the link with Steven Fletcher from Hibs continues to gather pace and currently seems to be far more likely to happen than not.
