No-one will have been more relieved to see Celtic’s second goal last night go in than Mikael Lustig.

The Swedish defender’s poor defending sold yet another goal against the Hoops, with RB Leipzig equalising Kieran Tierney’s fine opener at Celtic Park in UEFA Europa League action.

Thankfully for 60,000 souls in the East End of Glasgow, Odsonne Edouard combined perfectly with Ryan Christie to deliver a 2-1 win and a crucial three points for Brendan Rodgers’ men.

There was lots to be cheerful of on Thursday throughout a frantic 90 minutes, but the performance of Lustig was not one of those things.

After a fairly solid first half from the veteran defender, he seemed to lose the plot a bit from half-time onwards, failing to adequately deal with attacks on his flank. He was posted missing at the goal, leaving Dedryck Boyata and Craig Gordon nothing to do but offer accusing glares.

There is no doubt in my mind that he is no longer adequate at European level and he desperately needs replaced in the upcoming transfer window.

He’s been a fantastic player at times for us, he’s a leader in the dressing room and he’s won plenty of trophies, but please Celtic, no more.
