Celtic could be facing a late August bid for striker Moussa Dembele after Marseille missed out on one of their prime transfer targets on Friday night.

French outlet L’Equipe reported last week that the Ligue 1 giants were considering a bid for the Hoops man, but were still actively pursuing a deal for new Torino signing Simone Zaza.

The Italian outfit announced on Friday that they had captured the former Valencia man on a loan basis, with an obligation to purchase the player in a deal reportedly worth £12.5m.

With Marseille missing out on Zaza, who scored 13 La Liga goals last term, it makes sense that they would reignite their interest in Dembele given their reported anxiety to sign a number 9.

The 22-year-old has looked sharp in the early stages of the season and returned to scoring form on Saturday with an improvised finish against Partick Thistle.

Although the club are not in a position that forces them to sell big players, the exit from the UEFA Champions League could make the urge cash in on a player in the latter stages of the transfer window impossible to resist.

Fingers crossed that the big man is still here in September.

Although Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths are also at the club, popular opinion is that Dembele remains the best striker at the club and we’ll need his talents for the challenges ahead.
