The signing of Giorgos Giakoumakis was met with relative excitement and intrigue by the Celtic supporters.
Not many people knew who he was but what did impress the fans is his incredible scoring record in a relegation battling side.
The Greek international scored an incredible twenty six of Venlo’s forty three goals in thirty three appearances as he seemed to make it a one man mission to save his old club from relegation.
But with over ninety goals conceded, which included a league record defeat of 13-0 by Ajax, the Dutch side’s relegation fate was already written on the wall.
But as Giakoumakis looks ahead to his time at Celtic, the fans have been told that they are in for a treat by his former Sporting Director, Stan Valckx, “I don’t think it is unrealistic to say that between now and the end of the season he can score between 15 and 20 goals in Scotland. That should be realistic.
“Before I went to Poland to watch him in the flesh I had seen a few of his games on Wyscout, and what I saw is that he never gives up.”
“He keeps running, he keeps fighting. He does very well in the box, he doesn’t need that many chances, but I didn’t see that immediately in the game in Poland.
“What was clear was his character,”
A glowing endorsement of Celtic’s new boy and it seems that, when given the chance, Giakoumakis will be a goal machine in the green and white hoops.
