Celtic midfielder Paul Hartley has claimed former club Hearts are interested in re-signing him on a free transfer.

The 32-year-old Scotland international is currently out of contract and has reportedly received offers from clubs in England and Greece. Hartley is thought to be waiting until Celtic appoint a new boss (who isn’t?) until deciding his future.

Hartley told the Evening Times: “I’ve got a massive decision to make. You never know about staying with Celtic – but there has been no offer from them. But I’ve got a few options to consider. There has been interest from Hearts and I’ve got a few options so I’m not ruling anything in or out.”

Previous reports in the press have suggested Hartley would prefer to stay with Celtic but, with no contract offered so far, he is weighing-up his options. Whether Hartley can still provide a valuable service for Celtic is questionable, he has always done his best for the club.

Putting this specific situation to one side, it does raise the interesting question of just how many changes will be made once the new manager is in place – assuming the board eventually get round to making the appointment!

Every Celtic fan, everywhere in the world has a view on what players could, perhaps should, be let go and which should be targeted as replacements, but the appeal of certain managers should not be underestimated. Personalities do still make a real difference when it comes to transfers.
