Sky Sports pundit Davie Provan, writing in his Scottish Sun column, has bizarrely dubbed Scott Brown ‘overrated’ as speculation about his future at Celtic grows.

The Hoops captain was linked with a move to Australia this week, with The Daily Mail reporting that Western Melbourne were planning an ambitious move for the former Scotland international.

Provan, will recognising Brown’s exceptional career with Celtic and his country, offered something of a backhanded compliment to the 33-year-old.

Writing for The Scottish Sun, the Sky man said:

I’ve never bought into the Scott Brown hype. Hugely overrated if you ask me. Too many square passes, not enough goals or discipline.

But you don’t play the number of games he has for Celtic and Scotland unless you have something about you.

Given what he’s shown over 11 years at Celtic, he’ll deservedly take his place in the pantheon of the club’s outstanding players.

Currently linked with a move to Australia, he’s earned the right to wind down any way he wants.

There’s no doubting that once upon a time at Celtic Brown’s passing left a lot to be desired but it hasn’t been relevant criticism for about six or seven years now.

As for his discipline? That’s never been as bad as made out either. In nearly 500 appearances for the Hoops, Brown only has a handful of red cards to his name. Hardly a scandal when he’s a combative midfielder.

If you haven’t bought into the Scott Brown ‘hype’ by now, you’re missing out.

His record speaks for itself.
