Former Celtic favourite Emilio Izaguirre looks set for a surprise return to Celtic Park this summer after confirming to a Central American radio station he is in discussions with the club.
Scottish media has already reported this morning about a potential move for the Honduran international, but the player himself is on the record speaking about a potential move.
As quoted by Radio America, the former Hoops man told a Costa Rican station: “I am arranging with Celtic to return. I do not plan to stay in Central America right now.”
Izaguirre had previously been linked with a move to Alajuelense who play in the Costa Rican top-flight, report the outlet, also adding that the player has options in Turkey and Croatia should a move to Celtic not work out.
The 32-year-old left Celtic last summer after seeing his first-team football reduced more and more after the emergence of Kieran Tierney but there’s no doubt he would be solid back-up again should he return.
He’s made over 250 appearances for the club, has a special relationship with fans and is more than capable of providing much-needed cover in the left-back position, something we currently lack.
There has been little chatter about the club making a move for any other left-backs and at this point it appears Izaguirre would be the best option, especially since he wouldn’t require a transfer fee.
