You have to feel sorry for young Stephen Welsh.

Just when it seemed he could be set for a run in the team after an impressive performance in last week’s 2-0 win over Aberdeen, sickness rolled in and ruled him out of the Ross County fixture over the weekend.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, his replacement Moritz Jenz comes in with a debut goal to help the Hoops secure all three points at Dingwall.

With Carl Starfelt making the bench on Saturday, are we looking at an opportunity lost for Welsh moving forward as he strives to claim a permanent spot in Ange Postecoglou’s team?

Not really according to former Celtic defender Mark Wilson.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, Wilson had some words of encouragement for Welsh: “I wouldn’t say this is the end of him just because Jenz has come in.

“I think he’ll still find his way into Ange Postecoglou’s side.

“The interesting thing reading in the papers was that Ange Postecoglou saying that he has players for every position.

“And that his starting eleven isn’t necessarily his starting eleven for the full season. He can chop and change it.

“I think that’s always going to be a plus point.

“The depth that Celtic have got at the start of this season compared to last season is totally night and day.”

I’ve always liked Welsh whenever he has pulled on the Celtic jersey.

There is no doubt the Scotland defender needs more game time for the Hoops to help his progression and I would like to see him used more often this season, especially with the number of fixtures coming up in September as the Champions League group stages kick in.
