Today is something of a “Thriller” in terms of Celtic transfer rumours – even if the chances of Hull City paying £6million for striker Scott McDonald are more than a little slim.

According to the Daily Record, the English Premier League side “have made behind-the scenes inquiries about the little Australian as they bid to beef up their attacking options for next season’s survival struggle.”

The newspaper goes on to suggest “chief executive Peter Lawwell would be unlikely to do business unless an offer in excess of £6million is tabled but that price won’t scare Hull who must spend to try to stay up again”.

Given the 25-year-old Australia international cost around £700,000 when he joined from Motherwell in the summer of 2007, combined with his shaky form during the past year, means a bid of anywhere near £6million would be hugely tempting.

However, even if that figure is unrealistic and Hull offer closer to half of it, Lawwell and Tony Mowbray will have to give serious thought as to whether to accept it. Changes are needed to Celtic’s squad if the club are to build for the future and those changes are likely to begin soon.

Assuming the rumour is true – and, yes, that is a massive assumption – a lot may depend on whether Celtic beat Hull in the race to sign Nancy striker Marc-Antoine Fortune. The player is expected to decide between the two clubs within the next few days.
