Daniel Majstorovic has promised Celtic fans they will see a player “who always gives 100 per cent on the field” after joining the club on a two-year deal and admitted he couldn’t turn down the opportunity to “be part of this massive club”.

The 33-year-old Sweden international finalised his free transfer from AEK Athens yesterday having negotiated his release from the cash-strapped Greek club. Now Majstorovic could make his Celtic debut against Utrecht in the Europa League clash on Thursday (Aug 19).

Majstorovic looked intimidating enough when unveiled yesterday and there is no doubt he knows how to tackle, something of a dying art in recent years, and it’s no surprise some are suggesting he could fill the void created when Bobo Balde fell out of the first-team picture under Gordon Strachan.

Majstorovic said: “First of all they (the fans) will see a player who always gives 100 per cent on the field. To take back the title for Celtic is very important. Last week I was focused for the season coming up with AEK Athens. We played very well in pre-season.

“I wasn’t thinking about this but when you have an opportunity to be part of this massive club with fans all over the world and with a great reputation in Europe, then I’m very happy. I’m a winner and I want to be part of this club.”

Boss Neil Lennon has already moved to dispel fears about the player’s age, suggesting Majstorovic could play for another three or four years. Lennon also hailed Majstorovic’s experience, presence, comfort on the ball and his ability to win important headers in both boxes.

Before joining AIK in 2008, Majstorovic has previously played for Basel, Twente, Malmo, Vasteras, Fortuna Koln and Brommapojkarna. He has been capped 35 times by Sweden and scored twice. From his record and attitude, it seems Celtic have finally signed the sort of defender fans have wanted for some time.
