International star open to summer Celtic move

General view of Celtic Park

As Celtic sealed the deal on the Liam Shaw pre contract yesterday another transfer rumour is doing it’s rounds regarding hte Hooops.  The Times reports that Scotland international penalty hero, David Marshall, is apparently “open” to a return move back to Paradise.

Marshall started off his career at Celtic Park and who could forget that famous night in Barcelona when the big ‘keepers pulled off heroic save after save to earn the Hoops an incredible draw in the UEFA Cup back in 2004. But that wasn’t the beginning of Marshall’s fairy tale.  In the first leg of that tie, he was thrust into the 1-0 home first leg home win against the Catalan giants when Rab Douglas was famously sent off for a half time bust up in the Celtic tunnel.  Marshall’s goalkeeping masterclass at the Nou Camp sent the Parkhead men through to the next round 1-0 in aggragate.

Marshall’s career stalled when Gordan Strachan took over the reigns and 9 goals conceded in two games against Artmedia Bratislava and Motherwell in Strachan’s first two opening games for the Hoops prompted the Celtic manager to bring Polish favourite Artur Boruc. After a lengthy spell on the bench he was sent on loan at Norwich and the move was made permanent in July 2007.

Marshall was out of contract in the summer of this year but Celtic opted to bring in Greek internationalist Vasilis Barkas from AEK Athens for £4.5m and with Barkas struggling for any kind of form this season, this has prompted Celtic to look at other options and it is believed they may go in for Marshall in the summer as the veteran stopper only has one year left on his current deal.
