With Celtic still in the hunt to make additions to their squad this summer, the speculation on Shamrock Rovers defender Liam Scales was at an all time high last week.

It is expected that the Parkhead club will capture the Republic of Ireland u21 star for a fee of around £500,000 and pundit, Noel Whelan, believes this could be a bargain signing for the club.

Whelan was speaking to Football Insider as he cast his eye over the 23 year old, “You are looking at a figure that is a drop in the ocean for a club like Celtic.

“It is not much of a risk for a player who sounds like he has a lot of pedigree and has played in Europe already.

“Shamrock Rovers have always been a very successful side and they have brought through a lot of good players over the years.

“You do not go into the Irish league unless you believe the player has the capability of making the step up.

“It could be a great bit of business from Celtic for a centre-half who could become a permanent fixture for them.

“I bet he is hungry and he will fancy his chances if he makes the move because he knows the problems Celtic have had in defence.”

Scales is expected to join the club over the next week or so and he scored last week for Shamrock Rovers in their Europa League qualifier against Flora Tallinn and also being heavily tipped to be capped by Ireland boss, Stephen Kenny,  in the next upcoming World Cup triple headers.
